Hat Care Guidance and Instructions
General Steps to Cleaning a Felt Hat
To clean a felt hat at home, start with dry cleaning (brushing and lifting dust). Always check the care label first and spot-test any method on a hidden area.
-
Place the hat on a clean surface or hold it by the brim.
-
Using a soft hat brush, brush the crown and brim in one direction, usually counterclockwise, including the underside of the brim.
-
Use light pressure; finish with a gentle pass in the same direction to lay the fibers smoothly.
-
Remove accessories like feather pins or removable bands if possible, and avoid soaking any leather band.
-
For stubborn dry marks, use a dry hat sponge or felt-cleaning sponge, rubbing in one direction or gentle circles until the mark lifts.
NOTE: If there is any sign of distortion or color bleed, stop and consult a professional cleaner – like Stingy Brim Hats.
Important Don’ts
-
Do not put a felt hat in a washing machine or dryer; agitation and heat can shrink and misshape it.
-
Do not use hot water or strong detergents, bleach, or harsh stain removers directly on the felt.
-
Do not scrub aggressively or saturate delicate or dress felt unless the manufacturer specifically allows washing.
